Advantages and disadvantages of O Gauge droppers
I love everything related to the hobby of model trains. In my opinion, there is no wrong scale/metric to deal with. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. However, my favorite trains are gauge trains. While gauge trains aren’t the cheapest or easiest to afford, they are worth every penny.
The main thing that can be considered a disadvantage of gauge droppers is their size. It is the largest of the indoor train models. If you are going to run a gauge train, you will need some space. Personally, I recommend at least thirty-six square feet at least. If your available space is smaller than that, you should probably use a smaller domain. If your space is very limited, you should go by N train. N band trains run on tracks where the rails are only 9mm apart.
If you have plenty of space available, size is the scale’s biggest advantage. The higher the size, the more room you have for more detail. The smaller scales are not as detailed as the trains. Your model railroad scene will also suffer from smaller trains. The most impressive model railroad layouts I’ve seen were run to scale. The mountains are even more impressive. Buildings rise to higher heights. The tunnels are longer and have more impact. Your bridges will also be more attractive with a gauge train. I get goosebumps every time I see a model train go over a bridge. Bridges are my favorite part of a model railroad landscape.
O gauge trains also rule when it comes to authenticity. There is no comparison. If you just want a game, by all means go with another scale. However, if you are the type that wants all the details right, then you need to scale. O-scale trains tend to match their historical counterparts to the smallest detail. Personally, I like to look up the actual trains. What towns did they pass through? What kind of architecture existed at that time? What was the scene like at that time? Search the Internet and your local library for photos taken at the age of your train. It can be very addictive to say the least.
