One of the most common is scale N which ranges from 1/148 to 1/160 of the size of an actual train. Putting it in perspective, a 70-foot locomotive would be about 5-1/4″ to 5-5/8″ long.

With the small size, there are advantages and disadvantages. Let’s start with what people love about trains widely.

First, N-scale model trains can fit just about anywhere. A simple oval ring setup can be placed on a 2’x8′ or even 3’x5′ piece of plywood. In fact, N scale model trains have been referred to as “table top trains” because they can be placed on top of a kitchen or dining room table. This makes model trains more accessible for those people who don’t have a lot of space – you won’t need a spare room or basement to get a good setup when using the N gauge.

The second advantage is that because of the size, you can develop a more elaborate setup in the same amount of space than you can on larger trains. While a 4’x8′ setup for the next larger, HO scale, will be no more than a loop or figure 8, an N scale can contain one or even two relatively complete scenes with ascending paths and multiple levels. For this reason, model train aficionados with limited space can fall in love with N scale model trains. N scale really allows them to create a complete and complex world.

The last reason people enjoy N trains is precisely because they are so small. It’s the same reason people love mini-games of any kind. It’s amazing that these little machines actually work and it’s hard to believe that such a small world actually exists and could be so beautiful.

There are some drawbacks to N Scale railways though:

First, it’s just too small for some people. While some people like miniatures, others prefer the weight and heft of larger trains. In addition, the actual sounds made by N-scale trains on the tracks are much higher pitched than those on larger, heavier train scales. N scales do not have the same “feel” of weight that many enthusiasts want from their models as they try to recreate real trains.

Another defect is the one that indicates pride in workmanship. Many designers take justifiable pride in their work – they can spend many hours over many months or even years trying to develop a design. Unfortunately, because N-scale train settings are often in such small areas, the amount of work that went into creating this scene, which easily equals larger schemes, is not appreciated by others who might come to see it. On typical train shows, smaller N scale layouts are easy to overlook if they are close to a larger one.

One overlooked aspect of N-range trains is that it’s hard to work out the details once you get home. For example, if you’re someone who loves aerial trains, it’s harder to make this weathering realistic on an N scale than it is with the next volume, HO Scale Train.

The N scale models are likely too small for many young children to play with because they may not have the fine motor skills needed to work with them yet, and even for younger children they are potential choking hazards. On the other hand, adults with large hands may find them difficult to handle simply because they are so small.

Finally, while N scale model trains are popular, they are not as popular as HO. Because of this, the selection is smaller and there are fewer resources geared specifically to N-band trains.

All in all, N Scale trains definitely belong in the train modeling community. For many model railway enthusiasts, the advantages outweigh any disadvantage and they enjoy these beauties for hours on end.

Model trains come in a variety of sizes or scales.
