This scale has a ratio of 1:220, making this one of the smallest trains ever sold commercially. If you’re looking for larger layouts in a small space, you’ve found the right scale.

There are certainly advantages and disadvantages to the Z scale:

1. The Good – You can fit these layouts in almost any space. People even fit these charts inside briefcases, guitar cases, and mini boxes providing portable layouts. This is only possible because of the small percentage that the Z scale has. You can view these layouts just about anywhere. Inside your home, you can have a Z-shaped planner on your coffee table, kitchen counter, or mantle. Space isn’t an issue with the Z scale, so don’t worry about where to put your design as long as it’s protected from dust, pets, little hands, etc.

2. The bad – the scale is small. With a small scale there are some problems and complications. First, the price could be more in Z-scale, because cutting requires more precise production. Although with that being said, you will save money in other ways because your layout will cover a smaller area. The pieces are also very delicate and fragile, so you have to be very careful with your design. Secondly, the pieces must be out of the reach of children. With small locomotives and rolling stock, these schemes can be very dangerous with children around. Also if you have large unsteady hands or poor eyesight you will have many problems with this mini electric train set. Finally, with such a small size you may have complications in the process. Even the slightest amount of dust and particles can disrupt the smoothness of your train. You have to keep these schematics very clean to make sure that they can work to their full potential.

Now that you have some options for its weight, you can better decide if a Z-scale train is to your taste and specifications. They’re not for every fashionista, but there are tens of thousands who have a special love for them and their mini size. Remember that they are less common than larger gauges, so don’t get too frustrated if you can’t easily locate materials and pieces locally. Just search the net.

So, if you decide to catch up on a Z-train and plan, you’ll need to know which companies to check out and explore. The two most popular types I’ve seen online for a Z scale are the Marklin and the Micro-Train. They both got good reviews, but it’s all about my opinion, of course. So, in order to develop your own opinion, I am going to enlighten you briefly about both manufacturers.

Marklin:

Model Z trains started with manufacturer Marklin, so it’s only natural that they’re a bit more popular. Marklin produces very powerful locomotives for their compact size. Marklin also offers kits that run on battery power, due to the popularity of moving these little layouts from one place to another. These kits can be less powerful than a kit with an adapter, so know that if you buy a battery-powered kit. Marklin offers adapter-supported kits, so don’t worry about that. Again, Marklin started the Z scale trend, so they tend to have a larger audience and customers.

Small trains:

The first thing to note about Micro-Trains Line (MTL) is that they only have prototype diesel locomotives. The downside of the MTL is that it does not carry steam locomotives. If you are looking specifically for a steam locomotive, you will need to use Marklin or another manufacturer. MTL offers some interesting starter kits, so it’s definitely worth a look. For one thing, they’re not Marklin and they have their own products to offer, so they deserve some of your attention in the Z scale market.

Welcome to the Z scale, one of the world’s smallest model trains.
